Laser hallmarking: why the trade moved away from punches

A punch works by force. On a finished piece, that force has to go somewhere.

Why gold and silver are harder to mark than steel

A fiber laser works at 1064 nm. Precious metals send most of that light straight back, so far less energy goes into the piece than the same setting would put into steel.

How much of the beam bounces off at 1064 nm. Silver and gold reflect almost all of it. Steel absorbs far more, which is why a setting that works on a steel tag does nothing on a gold band.

Two things follow from this. First, more watts is not the answer — push the power up and the piece pits or burns before the mark improves. Second, the settings matter more on jewelry than on any other material, and they change with each alloy.

How to choose a jewelry laser engraver

Three questions about what you make. The first one decides the fixture.

Do you mark inside rings?

Yes → a machine with a rotary fixture.
No → a flat table is enough.

Question 2

Mostly silver, or mostly gold?

Silver and thin pieces → MOPA.
Gold and heavier work → standard fiber.

Question 3

Back room or shop counter?

Counter → saved jobs matter more than power.
Back room → marking area matters more.

Questions about jewelry laser marking

Can marking silver damage the laser itself?

It can, on a cheap machine. Silver sends most of the beam back up the same path it came down, and a source without proper isolation slowly cooks itself on that returning light.

This is the reason a laser that works fine on steel tags can fail after a few months of silver work. Tell us you work in silver and we will supply a source built for it.

Can it engrave a fingerprint or someone's handwriting?

Yes, and both sell well. A fingerprint is scanned or taken with ink and photographed. Handwriting is scanned from a note or a signature.

The image has to be cleaned up first, the same way a photo does — sharp lines, no grey smudges. Send us a sample and we will tell you whether it will engrave cleanly at ring size.

Can we mark a ring with stones already set?

Yes. Nothing touches the piece and no force goes into it, which is why the trade moved from punches to lasers for finished work.

Keep the beam off the stones themselves. Heat-sensitive, treated and filled stones should be masked, or the piece marked before setting.

Does it work on plated pieces?

Rhodium plating is only about one micron thick, so it does not fill a mark that was cut into the metal. What it does cover is a light mark that only changed the surface colour.

So if the piece gets plated afterwards, tell us. We set the mark deep enough to still be there, instead of just dark enough to see now.

Marking after plating works too, but the laser cuts through that thin layer and the base metal shows. That gives contrast, and it also leaves that spot unprotected.

Can the same machine cut as well as engrave?

A marking laser will not cut sheet. Cutting name pendants or filigree from silver sheet takes a higher-power source set up for cutting, which is a different machine.

If you want both, say so at the quote stage. It changes which machine makes sense rather than being something you add later.

Should we mark before or after polishing?

After, in most shops. Polishing a marked piece softens the edges of the mark, and a heavy buff can take a light mark off a soft metal altogether.

Marking last also means you only mark pieces that passed inspection, which matters when the mark carries a serial number.

How much does a jewelry laser marking machine cost?

The deep relief machine starts at $3,000. Ring, desktop fiber and MOPA machines are priced on configuration, because the fixture, the power and the marking area all change the figure.

All of them cost far less than the machines sold through jewelry tool catalogues, which often run from $20,000 to over $30,000.
