Automotive Marking Machines

Automotive marking is judged at your customer, not on your own shop floor. HeatSign builds dot peen for parts that get painted later, and laser for parts that do not.

Five machines for automotive marking

Pick the machine by what happens to the part after marking. HeatSign builds both kinds — dot peen machines that press the mark into the metal with a pin, and laser machines that mark the surface with light — so the advice follows your process, not what we want to sell.

Bench Dot Peen · Electric

The workhorse for parts marking

Price Range : $1900 ~ $2900

Fixed table, same position every cycle. This is what most tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers buy first — it covers brackets, housings, gear cases and flanges with nothing more than a simple stop.
Electric drive  |  No air line needed
Text, serials, date codes and Data Matrix from one file

Gear cases . Brackets . Housings . Flanges . Fasteners

HS-PE01-P · Pneumatic portable

When the part gets coated afterwards

Price Range :$1800 ~ $2500

Compressed air pushes the pin harder than an electric motor, so the mark goes deeper. Engine blocks and chassis parts need that, because they are blasted and painted after marking. A seven-inch screen is built in, so you do not need a computer beside the machine.

Depth to 0.5 mm on softer steel  |  Marking area 140 × 60 mm
Built-in touchscreen, no PC  |  Needs compressed air

Engine blocks . Cylinder heads . Chassis parts . Raw castings

Cordless Dot Peen · Battery

For parts already built into something

Price Range : USD 1,600 ~ USD 2,850

No cable and no air line. You carry the head to the vehicle instead of moving the vehicle to a machine. That is what frame numbers, engine numbers and re-marking after a repair need.

Battery powered  |  No air, no mains
Holds itself on steel  |  For parts that cannot be lifted

rotary marking machine

HS-DP200-R · Rotary dot peen

For shafts, axles and round parts

Price Range : USD 3000 ~ USD5000

The fixture turns the part while the head stays still, so the pin hits with the same force all the way round. Mark a round part without it and the middle comes out deep and the ends shallow, which is what makes a code fail its check.

Fixture 4–200 mm  |  Part weight to 200 kg
Marking area 160 × 100 mm  |  Repeatability 0.01 mm

Fiber Laser Marking

Desktop Fiber Laser · 20W / 30W / 50W

Laser marking in the automotive industry

Price Range: USD 1950 ~ USD 5000

On a machined surface that will not be painted, a laser marker for automotive components gives a sharper, higher-contrast code than dot peen. Nothing touches the part, which matters on thin walls.

No contact, no consumables  |  Air cooled
Fine Data Matrix on machined steel, stainless and aluminum

Machined faces  .  Nameplates  .  Sensor bodies  .  Thin-wall parts

Plastic interior parts, connectors or fuse boxes? Those need a cold beam that does not melt the edge of the code. See the UV laser marking machine for those.

Will the mark still be there after painting?

The mark goes on when the part is still raw. Then it is washed, heated, blasted and painted — and only one kind of mark survives all of that.

0.05 mm How deep a laser mark usually goes
0.10 mm How thick the paint on top usually is
0.50 mm How deep a dot peen mark can go

Still do not know which machine suitable you?

So the rule is simple. If the part gets painted or coated after marking, use dot peen. If it stays bare, a laser gives you a finer and cleaner code.

How to choose an automotive marking machine

Four questions about the part. The first one decides the technology.

QUESTION 1

Does the part get coated later?

Yes → dot peen, with depth.
No → laser gives finer codes.

QUESTION 2

As-cast or machined surface?

Rough as-cast → dot peen.
Machined pad → laser reads better.

QUESTION 3

Flat face or round?

Round → rotary fixture, or depth varies across the code.

QUESTION 4

Can the part reach the machine?

Yes → bench.
Already assembled → portable or battery head.

We will tell you when the cheaper machine does the job. A rotary fixture looks impressive in a demo. If all your parts are flat brackets, it is money you do not need to spend.

What gets marked on each part

Automotive part marking covers more surfaces than most suppliers expect. These eight families cover almost everything a tier 2 or tier 3 supplier is asked to mark.

Why labeling car parts gave way to direct marking

Labels still make sense for boxes and pallets. What changed is that the part underneath now carries its own identity too.

labeling car parts VS direct marking

Automotive parts labeling

  • Adhesive fails with heat, oil and vibration
  • Does not survive washing, blasting or e-coat
  • Can be peeled off and put on a counterfeit part
  • A consumable cost on every part

Direct part marking

  • Nothing to peel, because nothing was added
  • Survives the full process and the vehicle's life
  • Cannot be transferred to another part
  • No consumables once the machine is bought

Where automotive marking gets difficult

Four things that decide whether a supplier passes an audit or reworks a batch.

It-reads-here-and-fails-at-your-customer.png

It reads here and fails at your customer

Your scanner is new, held at the right angle, in good light. Your customer’s receiving area is none of those. A code that only just reads in your factory has nothing left to spare when it gets there.
  • ISO/IEC 29158: The DPM grading standard
  • Grade A–F: What an audit asks for

What HeatSign does

We set the machine to read well, not to only just read. Tell us the grade your customer asks for and we will say whether your surface can reach it.

Rough castings make the code hard to read

Rough castings make the code hard to read

A sand-cast surface is rougher than the small squares that make up the code. The reader cannot tell a code cell from the casting grain, so the score drops.
  • Dot peen: Works on rough as-cast
  • Machined pad: What laser needs

What HeatSign does

On raw castings, dot peen at a larger cell size beats a fine laser code every time. If the drawing already has a machined pad, laser is the better choice.

same code

Marking has to fit your cycle time

Automotive means volume. A machine that marks a perfect code in twelve seconds is useless on a line that has eight seconds per part — and nobody finds out until the machine is installed.
  • Outline: Fastest for text and serials
  • Cell size: Drives Data Matrix time

What HeatSign does

We quote against your real code and your real cycle time, not a demo. Send the code content, the character height and how many seconds you have per part.

serail number

Serials cannot come from a keyboard

Every part needs its own number, and that number has to match a record. If an operator types it in at shift change, one wrong digit breaks the whole chain.
  • Auto-increment: Serials, date and shift codes
  • File or database: Read, not retyped

What HeatSign does

The software auto-increments serials and reads part numbers, lot codes and heat numbers straight from a spreadsheet or a database export, then builds the Data Matrix from the same source.

What the automotive standards ask for

If you supply into an OEM programme, this is why marking came up. If you make your own aftermarket parts, you can skip this part.

Standard
What it covers
What it means for the machine
IATF 16949
Traceability across the supply chain
Unique, permanent identification on every part
AIAG B-17
Direct Data Matrix marking on parts
Cell size and placement drive the machine and the cycle time
ISO/IEC 29158
Grading a direct part mark

Depth and character height are specified — see the VIN page

Read this as background, not as advice. The real requirement comes from your customer’s part drawing and supplier manual, and those are usually stricter than the standard they refer to.

Tell us the numbers you have been given — mark depth, character height, code size — and we will say whether our machines can produce them. Your customer decides whether that meets their standard.

Questions about automotive marking

Will marking weaken a safety-critical part?

It is the right question for suspension arms, steering parts and connecting rods. Any dent is a small stress point, which is why part drawings usually say where you may mark and where you may not.

A dot peen pin has a rounded tip and leaves a rounded dent, not a sharp cut like a hand stamp.

Stay inside the marking area on your customer’s drawing. Send us that drawing if you want us to check the machine can reach it.

Can it mark a part that still has oil or coolant on it?

Dot peen can. The pin pushes through a film of oil, coolant or light rust, so parts coming straight off a machining centre do not need cleaning first.

A laser cannot. Oil on the surface burns and leaves a dirty mark with poor contrast, so laser marking needs a clean, dry part.

Should we mark before or after heat treatment?

Most suppliers mark before, because the part is softer and the mark goes deeper with less force. The risk is that furnace scale or distortion closes up a shallow mark.

Marking after heat treatment avoids that, and dot peen still works up to 60 HRC. Tell us the hardness and which step you want to mark at, and we will say if it is realistic.

Can one machine handle several different part numbers?

Yes. Each part number is saved as its own file, with its own text, position and settings. The operator picks it from a list, so changeover is choosing a file, not resetting the machine.

What does change between parts is the fixture that holds them. If your parts are very different shapes, plan for two or three simple fixtures rather than a second machine.

How often do the marking pins need replacing?

The pin is the only real consumable. On normal automotive steel it lasts around three to six months of production, and pins are inexpensive.

Harder material and deeper marks wear it faster. A worn pin shows up as a shallower, rounder dot long before it fails, so it is a planned change and not a breakdown.

Do we need a code reader as well as the marking machine?

If your customer asks for a graded code, yes. A verifier is a separate device that scores the code against ISO/IEC 29158 — the marking machine makes the code, it does not measure it.

Many suppliers start with an ordinary barcode scanner just to check the code reads, and only buy a verifier when a customer asks for a grade on paper.

How much does an automotive marking machine cost?

The pneumatic portable is $2,000 to $3,000 and the rotary system $3,000 to $5,000. Bench dot peen, cordless dot peen and desktop fiber are priced on how they are configured, because marking area, power and fixtures all change the price.

Send the part, the code content and your daily quantity and you will have a figure the same working day.
