Every leather machine needs a fume extractor. Leather smoke is sticky. Without it the smoke settles back on the hide and coats the lens, and your marks get weaker through the shift. Buy it with the machine, not after.

Faux leather laser engraving: PU or PVC?

This is the most asked question in leather work, and the one with the most bad advice around it.

  • Safe to laser with the extractor running
  • It melts instead of burning
  • The edge can go shiny at high power
  • Use low power and add a second pass
PVC based — we advise against it
  • The laser will mark it. That is not the problem
  • It gives off acid gas when heated, so you need a filtered extractor, not just a fan
  • Over months that gas still wears down the lens and the metal parts inside
  • Cutting PVC is far worse than marking it, because it makes much more gas
  • Most leather makers move to PU instead. If PVC is unavoidable for you, tell HeatSign before you order so we can plan the extraction properly

Four things that go wrong with leather etching and engraving

These four cause almost every complaint we hear. None of them needs a more expensive machine.

01 Chrome tanned leather marks pale

Vegetable tanned leather goes dark because of what is in the hide. Chrome tanned leather does not, so the same setting gives a grey, washed-out mark.

More power does not fix it. It only burns the surface. Either use a veg tanned hide for the marked part, or accept a lighter tone. HeatSign will show you both on your own leather first.

02 The finished product smells burnt

Leather smoke soaks into the surface and stays there. On a costly wallet or bag that means a returned order, not a small complaint.

Pull the smoke away, or mark cold. A fume extractor solves it on most hides. On soft, costly leather a UV laser marks without heating the hide at all, so there is no smell to remove.

03 The edge goes hard and cracks

Too much power burns right through the top layer. The leather around the mark turns stiff, and a belt marked that way splits where it bends.

04 Faux leather melts and bubbles

PU faux leather does not burn like a real hide. It melts, and at high power the edge goes shiny or bubbly. PVC faux leather can be marked too, but it gives off acid gas while you do it.

Low power and more passes for PU. For PVC you need a filtered extractor, and even then the gas slowly wears the machine down. Tell HeatSign which one you have and we will tell you what it needs.

A small desktop laser costs around one or two thousand dollars. A HeatSign machine costs more. Here is what the extra money buys on leather, and when you do not need it.

The biggest difference is not the laser itself. It is how the smoke is handled, how fast the beam moves, and whether piece ten thousand still looks like piece one.

The honest version. If you make twenty wallets a week in a home workshop and you also want to cut leather shapes, a hobby machine is the right buy and HeatSign will tell you so. Leather engraving machine questions we get most

Why does the same setting look different on every piece?

Because leather is not the same all over the animal. The back is dense and even. The belly stretches during tanning and takes the beam differently. If your supplier does not say which part of the hide the blanks came from, expect the tone to move between batches.

Keep one scrap from every delivery and run a test on it before the batch. Two minutes of testing saves a whole run.

Black soot rubs off on my hands after marking. How do I stop it?

That is burnt hide sitting loose on the surface. It is normal, and it comes off with a damp cloth and a little mild soap.

To stop it in the first place, tape over the area before you mark. Ordinary masking tape works. The tape takes the soot, you peel it off, and the leather around the mark stays clean. This matters most on large marks.

Our leather is oiled. Will that change the result?

Yes. Oil and wax sit on top of the hide and soak up part of the beam, so the mark comes out lighter than on dry leather of the same thickness.

Wipe the piece with a dry cloth first. If there is a wax finish, a light wipe with alcohol takes it off without harming the surface. Then set the machine on that leather, not on a dry sample.

Can we put a photo on leather?

Yes, and it looks good. Leather has its own texture, which suits portraits better than a flat plastic surface does.

Photos need a much finer setting than a logo, and lower power. Send HeatSign the image and tell us the leather, and we will run it here on the same type of hide so you can see the result before you order.

The smell is very strong. Is that a warning sign?

Some smell is normal. You are burning a natural material, so it will smell like burnt hair or leather.

A sharp, chemical or acid smell is not normal. It usually means the material is chrome tanned or contains PVC. Stop the machine, find out what the material actually is, and do not run it again until your extraction can handle it.

Our patches are already finished and coated. Why is the mark weak?

Because the beam is hitting the coating, not the leather. Painted, sealed and heavily finished pieces do not darken the way raw leather does.

On some coatings the laser lifts the top layer and the base colour shows through, which gives good contrast. It depends on the finish, so this one always needs a test piece.

Can the machine mark a different name on every piece?

Yes. Numbers step up on their own and the date comes from the clock. For personal orders you load a list from a spreadsheet and the machine reads down it, one line per piece.

That is how gift orders and made-to-order goods get marked without anyone typing a name at the machine.
