A portable pneumatic marking machine — also called a handheld dot punching machine — uses compressed air to drive a hard pin that punches tiny dots into the part. Here are the steps:
1. You bring the lightweight head to the part and hold it with the magnetic or frame base.
2. Compressed air drives a hard carbide pin. It impacts the surface at a high frequency.
3. An X-Y CNC system moves the pin to “draw” each letter or code as a pattern of dots.

Air power gives the pin a harder strike, so the mark goes deeper into hard metal. If you need deep, legal VIN marks or codes that survive paint, rust, and shot-blasting, pneumatic is the better choice. Electric portables make lighter marks and suit shallow IDs where no air line is available.
Yes. This marker runs on shop compressed air at 0.2 to 0.8 MPa. Most workshops already have a suitable air line. The higher pressure is what lets it strike deep into hard steel and forgings. If you have no air, ask us about the electric portable model.
Mark depth depends on the metal’s hardness. On softer metals the mark can reach about 1 mm; on very hard metals it is shallower. Not every metal reaches the full depth.
